Postpartum Exercise

Our Information Evening with a Tour of the Delivery Room

After pregnancy, most new mothers can hardly wait to get “back in shape.”
However, since midwives and gynecologists still advise against strenuous physical activity in the first few weeks, postpartum exercise is the first step toward counteracting the effects of the past few months. You can start this as early as when the
baby is ten to twelve weeks old.

The pelvic floor and abdominal muscles are put under significant strain during pregnancy and childbirth; muscles and
tissues become stretched and weakened and need to be strengthened again. For example, if the pelvic floor muscles are stretched by
the baby’s weight during pregnancy and further strained or even injured during childbirth, this can lead to
involuntary urine leakage when coughing, sneezing, or straining. If this is not counteracted with targeted exercises, women risk long-term consequences such as incontinence and prolapse of the abdominal organs. Postpartum exercise is not aimed at weight loss. Rather,
the goal is to restore the female body to its pre-pregnancy condition. Under the guidance
of an experienced midwife, women learn to sense their pelvic floor and contract it in a targeted manner to train the correct areas. In addition, breathing exercises and tips help women structure their daily lives in a way that is gentle on the back and pelvic floor. Many exercises even allow the baby to
participate, thereby strengthening the mother-child bond and fostering a loving relationship.

The postpartum recovery classes at Asklepios Klinikum, led by midwife Doris Prisille, take place every
Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the breastfeeding café.

The costs are covered by statutory health insurance.
You can register by calling (0 33 32) 53 28 30.
